‘Ballast existences’ was a term used by the Nazi administration to describe those deemed inferior due to mental illness. Ballast referring to excess or ‘dead weight’. It was a term rooted in the idea that a class of “Untermensh” existed. Those scheduled for the concentration camps and ultimately liquidation. This constituted a normalisation of utter mania. A formalisation of a mass sociopathic condition, manifested in a political system. This system was widely believed to be civilisation at its most developed. A homicidal frenzy, calculated to perfection. A mechanism of terror. An engine, unstoppable, reducing people to numbers, files, codes, leading only to death. How many echoes of this orchestrated dehumanisation can we hear today?

Gaerea's first release of "Unsettling Whispers" was in 2018, and since, they dared define a "black metal" niche of their own, they dared to walk a new path and stir shit up a bit in the realm of BM, this album is a masterpiece and a milestone proving that it can be done, provided the band can pull it off, and they did, oh they did! Gloomy, dark, post-BM sludgy whatever, it's Gaerea, and this one belongs in my BC collection, the end. sachavonkarl74
